Fascination of Plants Day 2015

Why plants can glow?

With the support of the European Project AccliPhot we would like to invite children aged 8 to 11 to participate in our workshop “Fascination of Plant science”. Through presentations and jointly performed live experiments we want to demonstrate and explain some fascinating plant mechanisms and functions as well as their significance for the scientific world.

Without plants, life on earth would not exist, as we know it today. Plants are the ones who produce the oxygen needed and form the basic food staples for all forms of life, including humans. Using the sunlight as energy source, plants are able to realise one of the most important biochemical processes on earth. This process called photosynthesis takes place in all cells containing chloroplasts. During the conversion of light energy into chemical energy light can be re-emitted by the chlorophyll resulting in a phenomenon called chlorophyll fluorescence. This is the energy that cannot be used by the plant and therefore is released as fluorescence, a property that may be useful for science in the future.

Participants: School classes (age 8-11), max. group size 30 pupils
